What do you do to get away from the crowds?

If you're anything like me you relish your quiet time during this area's busy summer season. I love a crowd of course, but sometimes Stearns Park or the State Park just have a few (hundred) too many people milling around for my liking. Anyone have secret spots of their own they'd like to share? One of mine is the big dune overlooking the Bass Lake Outlet between Ludington and Pentwater. The panoramic views out there are humbling to say the least!

If we share them online Andrew, they won't be secrets anymore :) . Summit park is a nice place for some solitude early in the season. You might want to try there for a beautiful view of Lake Michigan... without too many people. It has lots of nice shade trees too on those too hots to even be on the beach days. Hope you try it out!

yes, Summit Park is a great place to go for some solitude. I also enjoy going for walks along the Lake Michigan shoreline --- especially between Ludington and the state park. There is a stretch along there that is quite peaceful and for the most part, secluded. I also enjoy sitting on top of the sand dunes and looking out at the vastness of the lake. One summer, my wife and I actually made a recording of the lake during one of the rough water days and took it back to Tulsa with us so we could listen to the lake. Very soothing.

The beach between the Ludington State Park and Federal Park is usually a safe bet. I feet pretty secure sharing it because it's REALLY hard to get to. All you really have to do is get a bit off the beaten track and you can usually find a quiet spot. A kayak is also a pretty good way to beat the crowds.

I'd love to do more kayaking this summer - our neighbors have one and I always take it up the Outlet river into Bass Lake. Its curvy and quiet with trees hanging everywhere...perfect! You should try it.

I like Duck Lake, south of Whitehall, for kayaking and swimming. There are very few residents living on the lake so you don't have to dodge power boats. Also 2/3 of the lake is surrounded by public land making it easy to climb out of the kayak and go exploring or hiking. I recommend it.

Hey Thom, Welcome. That is so funny that you mention Duck Lake. When I was in high school in Hastings, after prom we would drive to the beach at Duck Lake and spend the day on Lake Michigan.

I like to go to the State Park beach it's usually warmer water there. I like to go for walks downtown, and sometimes while we are there we go to the art fair.
We love coming there in the summer time around the 4th we spend the whole week visiting and enjoying everything Ludington has to offer.

I know what you mean about the crowds. Seems like there's a huge crowd everywhere in Ludington in the summer, but my quiet spot was a little area up near the Manistee National forest, somewhere near Nurnberg rd. It was perfect because it had trees and wild life, and the lake was also right there.

I stay home... no crowds there and I only venture out in the mornings while most people are sleeping in :) haha..

There aren't usually a lot of people on the South breakwall. I like to go out there to watch the Badger come and go.

I hop in the DOGHOUSE, break the pierheads, and head into the setting sun for a few hours of weeknight fishing on the big lake before the weekenders take over the Loomis St. launch :)

You are right. It gets crowded. I still find the first paved parking after the check-in center on the way to the State Park an okay place to be. Some families, some young people and some older people (like me) enjoy that area. There is usually close parking and the hill isn't too bad to climb to get back to the car! The only other place I really hang is my own back yard!! There is usually friends or family around most of the summer and especially over the holidays so there is never a dull moment here!
