Mardi Clint Loney

Hi just a quick update for friends and classmates of Clint Loney. He will be having surgery on his neck where it was broken from the accident in March. It will be the 14th of May and will last about 6 hours!! Hopefully he will be able to get comfortable and remove the huge brace he is wearing after this! It is going to take some healing time but it is really needed. The broken bones aren't healing properly.... Thanks for all the prayers that continue to get prayed for Clint and his family. Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. Lighthouse May 9, 2008 By Ceil Heller

Lighthouse May 9, 2008 As usual I am up at 6:30; I gather my computer, my phone connector and list of pictures I want to send. (I found it easier if I select the pictures I want to send the night before.) I arrange the chairs in front of the stove; one to sit on the other to rest my feet on so the computer will be easier to work with on my lap, plug in to the phone line, grab a cup of coffee, that Ken has already made, sit with my polar bear flannel pajamas on and send you my blog. I enjoyed al… Continue

Rebecca Martin A Moment for Memorial Day

To die for our country is sweet and becoming is an “Old Lie” wrote Wilfred Owen. Owen was a poet, a WWI soldier, a boy dead at the age of 25. He is best known for the often anthologized “Anthem for Doomed Youth” and thus of minor import as war poet. Yet his was a voice of a generation. He was of a generation of young men fighting in a “Great War.” They must have felt a terrible excitement to be part of something on so grand a scale, a war of the very world. In the classroom they had memorized o… Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. Lighthouse, Thursday, May 8, 2008 By Ceil Heller

Lighthouse, Thursday, May 8, 2008 The sun is shining brightly, it is a little cool out but who cares. Today is my day off. I have a very busy day planned. I got a call from Christy around 7:30 am, it was evening in Australia. Good to visit with her until I lost my signal. I started out my day by getting a massage, how absolutely marvelous it was, by the time that was finished there was not a tense muscle in my body. Next on my list was lunch with my daughter in law’s mother. We had simply wonde… Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. Lighthouse, Wed. May 7, 2008 By Ceil Heller

Lighthouse, Wed. May 7, 2008 The sky is cloudy; we had a storm in the night. It blew in and was over within 30 min. It would remain cloudy all day until about 5pm when the sun came out. It would stay out until sunset. It was cool but not cold. Let me get this out of the way, I really botched my visit with Jack Ebling on the radio tonight. Sorry Jack, my fellow keepers were misbehaving and threw me off my mark. You and I both know I can do better. I am very sorry. It is to be Ken and Judy’s day… Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. Lighthouse, Tues, May 6, 2008 By Ceil Heller

Lighthouse, Tues, May 6, 2008 It is cloudy this morning; we are to have rain on and off. Once again the weather man was wrong. The clouds cleared a little and so I decided to go for a short walk, OK more like take pictures walk around the lighthouse. By the time I went outside the sun was shining. Sandy had gone for a walk also; she came back with a bag of trash that she picked up on the beach. Bruce and Ken went into town for breakfast; a stop at Lowe’s to Ludington Plumbing to pick up some b… Continue

MHankwitz MEAP Celebration Pictures & Parent Orientation

I have posted a few pictures on the MEAP celebration that took place last week. We still have our "Beat the Blahs" winner celebration and the 8th grade breakfast coming up. The big thing this week is the Parent Orientation on Thursday for the parents of incoming 6th-8th graders. If you have concerns or questions, please come and check us out. We would like more parent involvement and want the parents as excited about the middle school as we are. The kids have been here and now it's your turn. Ed… Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. Lighthouse, Saturday, May 3, 2008 By Ceil Heller

Lighthouse, Saturday, May 3, 2008 I am surprised that the sun is shining this morning. Ken went outside to “burn one” at 6:30A , came in then went back out 30 minutes later to “burn one” and said the wind picked up and the temperature dropped significantly. I was going for a walk on the beach anyway. The wind is eye watering when you walked to the south I went as far as I could stand it and then turned around walked up through the dunes and to the north of the lighthouse. I walk quite a ways wi… Continue

Patti, Olivia and I rode out to Big Sable today to meet this mysterious Ceil and small world, she's Carrie Young's mother-in-law. I shot this video with my phone, for those of you who haven't been to the top. show?id=2007390:Video:10804 Woke up to some sun, we were to have showers today but none until around noon. I did watch the male and female duck chase each other around. Ken says her nest is on the dune… Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. Lighthouse, Thurs. May 1, 2008 By Ceil Heller

Lighthouse, Thurs. May 1, 2008 Today is opening day. The sun is shining, it is the warmest morning we have had so far. The wind is out of the east so we did not have any crashing waves to listen to. It is always very soothing to hear the wave’s crash on to the shore. We had an eagle eating something on the beach along with a few crows. I got my camera but took as many pictures as I could. None really turned out. Why should they I was taking them from the kitchen window and 2 panes if glass. Rem… Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. Lighthouse, Wed. April 30,2008 By Ceil Heller

Very chilly this morning, but sunny, missed another sunrise. I was up but just too lazy to go out in the cold. Sandy had been up since 4 AM and drank some high test coffee and was wondering when we were going to go to the State Park house and unload my car. I told her I had to finish sending my blog first. So at 8:30 Sandy, Kathy and I are off to the house. Our purchases met with great approval by Kathy. We only have to take back a few things and get curtain rods. Sandy and Judy will do that tom… Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. Lighthouse, Tuesday, April 29, 2008, By Ceil Heller

Lighthouse, Tuesday, April 29, 2008 Wow! Was it cold this morning! The holding pond that developed on the beach from the wind and waves was frozen over with ice. I thought I should just take a picture from the kitchen window but decided that better pictures were to be taken if I bundled up and went out and got close ups. This is a first for me being at the lighthouse. I also missed another beautiful sunrise, because the alarm clock I said last year needed to be replace was not. Our plan is to g… Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. Lighthouse: Move in Day Sunday April 27, 2008 By Ceil Heller

I was up early very excited that I get to move into the lighthouse today. My plan was to leave the cabin about 1 PM. I started loading the car at 10 AM, not too excited am I? I took one last walk to the peninsula, the bloodroot flowers were destroyed in the storms. The trillium blossoms were still in bloom. I tried my hardest to keep myself busy until time to go to the lighthouse. Finally with the bicycle loaded and locked on the bike rack, I head into town to make grocery stop at Meijers. We ca… Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. PRELUDE TO LIGHTHOUSE ADVENTURE 2008, Sat. April 26, By Ceil Heller

PRELUDE TO LIGHTHOUSE ADVENTURE 2008, Sat. April 26, Yes, it is that time again when I return to the Big Sable Point Lighthouse for my 2 week keeper stay. I have added a couple of new people to my blog list of people to bore. One being Tom J. whom I am sure is looking for the mundane to read. As before if you don’t want to read the text, you can look at the pictures or just let me know and I can remove you from the list. No hard feeling. My boys tell me they just look at the pictures. It has be… Continue

Scott Little slow here.

OK like I said in my first post here, I haven't done this before and due to that little tidbit, I forgot I had done a post already. :) The big news though is that we were in town this week and found a house. Made an offer, and accepted the counter-offer which we knew was going to come. Very nice place and we are excited to have out own house to land in when we make the move in June. Just so happen to be coming into town on my oldest/best friends Birthdays so it is a good day to come home. On th… Continue

Scott First time for everything!

Well here it is, my very first blog post. Have read a few of them over the years, but have never felt I wanted to actually keep one. They seem like a blog spot could quickly become a pain, if you know what I mean. :) A little background for myself is in order I would think. I was born in Ludington (kind of limited in hospitals you know) and raised my formative years in Scottville. From the time I left Scottville with my parents just before High School I have lived in Texas, several other parts… Continue

Rebecca Martin I am the Walrus, Goo Goo Ga Joob

I’m a Rock Star in the Car. Enclosed in my vehicle, the world passing as I drive (well within the speed limit), I put big Hollywood sunglasses on and… sing. Well, singing may be a stretch -- I am belting the tunes out like Janis Joplin. With the base cranked high enough I can make the New Christey Minstrels sound like Led Zeppelin. Cars zooming by don’t just wave, they slow down, plug in the dashboard cigarette lighter and get ready to hold it aloft in musical appreciation. Either that or they’… Continue

Andrew Betka I'm going to Jacob's Pillow!

Haha! I've never won tickets for anything before! If you don't know, Jacob's Pillow is a dance festival held on a beautiful farm out in the Berkshires of Massachussettes. In the farm's beginning it was a major stop on the Underground Railroad so there is tons of history up there. Major dance companies from all over the world head to Jacob's Pillow in the summertime to rehearse, give free as well as ticketed shows, and hold master classes. I've always wanted to go out there and explore - it seems… Continue

Andrew Betka Rotting History

Every time I drive by the carferries on my way to PM Steamers, EVERY time, I look at the once beautiful SS Spartan and wonder "How can we allow such an important part of Ludington's history to collect rust in the harbor!?" Its bad enough that most of the other carferries were sold off for scrap, those ships could have made up a floating maritime museum sitting right on PM Lake! The Spartan is one of the last two boats of its kind in the world, and look at it! Rusted on the south side, not much b… Continue

Rebecca Martin It's All About the Core

I came across a statistic while attending the recent Michigan Chamber of Commerce Executives conference. According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Michigan residents are rated as the second most generous people in the United States, donating over 10% of household earnings. That presentation slide seemed suddenly very large and very bright and very to the heart of the matter. Believing that there are ideas bigger than you, working so that what you believe in can outlast you, and contributing w… Continue

Rebecca Martin Rime for a New Mariner

I’ve been thinking a lot about Samuel Taylor Coleridge and his “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” lately. It’s a great poem in seven parts that deals with a quest—a journey from the normal everyday life into the unknown. Our mission at the Chamber is suffused by that mariner’s tale. Its moral is as inexorable as the waves washing under our frozen western shore. The basic plot is simple: sailor sets sail with his mates, a “storm blast came” and the ship is driven by off course by a harsh, cruel wind.… Continue

Rebecca Martin Just a Great Lakes Girl

“Life is its own journey, presupposes its own change and movement, and one tries to arrest them at one’s eternal peril” Laurens van der Post Laurens van der Post was , of course, writing about Africa in Venture to the Interior but that in no way diminishes the philosophical meaning of his essential point: that a journey, to whatever destination, must be undertaken when one hears the call to a new beginning. He was answering a call to adventure; his book was actually a travelogue of his… Continue

Amanda My Journey to Health

After the birth of my last child I had a real wake up call. I didn't want my picture taken! I felt so gross looking at myself. I was 270 lbs at the birth of my daughter. A few months later I realized I was staying at about 236 lbs and not moving anymore. At the end of December (when she was 5 months old) I decided I was going to change my life. I needed to be healthier for my children. I wanted the energy to keep up with them. I wanted to be there to meet my great grand children some day. I cou… Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. Two weeks to race day.

Starting to get pumped a little. Rode 45 miles this morning with PH and MB. Was cold to start, but after that one Iceman a couple of years ago, nothing seems to cold really. I had to get a new phone a couple weeks ago, and I really liked my old one, but you gotta move on. Shortly after getting the Palm 755p I got an email from a company called Otterbox. They make protective cases for all sorts of things, laptops, iPods ( you can SWIM with an iPod and one of their cases, who'da thunk it)… Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. Three weeks to race day

After exercising nearly every day this winter it was time to ramp up for the race, so Dan, Cal and I went for a ride to the state park and back then out and around Duneview and back to Piney Ridge where we donned our Salomon trekking shoes and headed for the high dunes. A two hour hike only netted us five miles but they were good off camber and hilly miles. Cal and I did some pacing, turns out my stride is about 5% longer than his. Per 10th of a mile my steps were consistently longer than his, I… Continue

Shoreline Media, Inc. Adventure Race training

Now that my racing partner Dave is done with winning the Michigan Cup cross country ski race season and collecting all his medals from the World's out in Idaho (he won two bronze medals, btw) it's time for some more competition. What is an adventure race you say? AR combines mountain biking, canoeing and orienteering (finding your way with a map and compass). Sometimes other disciplines are thrown in. I'll just go over what we had to do in the Summer Groove, a race held in Pentwater last year. I… Continue
