Scottville, Custer, Branch too. What's in a name...

My dad charles and I spent many hours walking the beach from the first curve up into the manistee forest area. He worked much of the wood taken off the beach as drift wood or for turning on the lathe as much mahogony? was to be picked up discarded by ship traffic.

At the first curve north there are three grave sites covered by flat rock, otherwise not marked. Mostly drifted over most of the time, no markers. One site had a clay bottle on the top, which i have here. I think the flat rock came from the curve to the south which (and this is the discussion) was the original discharge point for the hamilin lake area. You can go to the first part of the south curve and find flat river bed rock in the sand areas that drift open. Be happy to donate the bottle for display.

So is there anyone that thinks the hamlin lake, created by the damm, discharged at the south end and either was diverted or covered by a sandstorm many years ago??

I don't know the answer, but it will be fascinating to read the discussion about this.

Diann,

If you look at the coast line from the water it has the same make up if and only if the hamlin lake discharged to the south of the south curve. do you remember the huge sand hill that was mined once right to the south of this area. what if- the mouth of the river blew closed-lake raised and began to discharge at the current site which was damned a hundred years later. that puts the grave sites in the time window of marquette which would be dated by the bottle.

Nothing like getting the old conversation going about where he died and if the indians sent back to get him just dug up whatever they would find.

I do know that lumberman, Charles Mears, altered the flow of the Au Sable River (the damming of which created Hamlin Lake), as he did Lincoln River and the Pere Marquette River. He was quite the guy, huh?!
